Publishing Our Book

Publishing Our Book

While Scott and I walked 500 miles on the Camino de Santiago in the Fall of 2016, I knew we would write about our experience.

I journaled extensively each evening the first week we walked, but by week two, I was too tired to write and needed to elevate my feet. This proved a challenge to try to write while lying down. Luckily, Scott kept good notes and accurate numbers of our miles walked each day.

After we returned home, we turned our trip into a series on the blog. We were thrilled with how it turned out. The next step came naturally, as I began to research our options for self-publishing a book.

Youtube to the Rescue

Thank goodness for Youtube! I found a great video which walked me through each step all the way to publication. Of course, everything didn’t go as smoothly for me, as I had formatting issues along the way. After many format changes, and an exceptional amount of patience on my part, the first paperback proof of our book arrived in the mail.

We were so excited! I quickly found many things to change and so we waited for proof #2 to arrive in the mail. With just a few changes and we were on to proof #3! Finally, we were happy with the end result of our book. It’s a pretty cool feeling to hold a book you have put so much effort into.

Walking the Camino de Santiago

This book encompasses our story of the ups and downs we experienced each day as we walked into the unknown.

I found writing and publishing this book to be a similar process.

Self Doubt

Doubts about my ability as a writer gnawed away at my confidence. I wondered if I was even qualified to write a book. I’ve taken online writing classes, belonged to a creative writing group, but wondered if it was enough.

I decided I had a story to tell, no matter what, and Scott was next to me the entire way. Publishing our book was a wonderful learning process and now we have the best keepsake of our trip.

If only one person is inspired to walk the Camino after reading our book, then we will be happy.

  1. This is exciting Jaynie, looking forward to reading my paperback copy, and definitely looking forward to walking the Camino! Thank you for all the inspiration you continue to give to the world by sharing your adventures with us.

  2. Wow what a great story. I am guilty when it comes to self doubt because even when I write something for my blog I doubt myself. Thank you for sharing this story.

  3. How awesome that you created a book! That is quite the accomplishment! I’m no stranger to self doubt – sometimes it’s just so hard to get out of the mindset that you’re going to fail. Luckily, you never know what will happen until you try so I always push myself toward my goals.

  4. Congratulations! Thanks too for keeping it real. You needed to rest not write that second week. I know how tricky self-publishing can be especially with ePub formatting. You did and I hope that it inspires others to follow in your footsteps.
